Gold-Filled vs. Gold-Plated
Gold-filled jewelry is made by bonding a thick layer of real gold (typically 14k or 18k) to a base metal like brass using heat and pressure. It contains significantly more gold than gold-plated pieces—about 100 times more—and is much more durable. Gold-filled pieces are tarnish-resistant, hypoallergenic for most people, and can last for years with proper care, making them an excellent choice for everyday wear.
Gold-plated jewelry, on the other hand, has only a thin layer of gold applied over a base metal, usually through electroplating. While it offers a similar look at a lower price point, the gold layer is minimal and tends to wear off or tarnish over time, especially with frequent use or exposure to moisture. It’s best suited for occasional wear or trend-driven pieces, but it won’t offer the same longevity or resistance as gold-filled jewelry.
At Lissa Gail, we use Gold-Filled not Gold-Plated. And as you can see there is a significant difference.
